When Yue Yang became a general of Wey, he led an attack on Zhongshan. His son was at the time in Zhongshan. The men of Zhongshan suspended the son [from the city wall] for Yue Yang to see, but Yue Yang, not in the least deterred by the sight, pressed his attack with redoubled vigor.

其子在中山，中山縣其子示樂羊，樂羊不為衰志，攻之愈急。

The men of Zhongshan accordingly boiled the son and presented Yue Yang with broth made from the son’s flesh.

中山因烹其子而遺之羹，樂羊食之盡一杯。

Yue Yang drank a full cup.

中山見其誠也，不忍與其戰，果下之。

When the men of Zhongshan saw how single-minded he was, they had no will left to do battle with him and surrendered the city.

遂為文侯開地。

Yue Yang used the land he had conquered to expand the territory of Wey.

文侯賞其功而疑其心。
