No one was aware of this when Xuandi came to the throne, and Bing Ji himself did not speak of it.
When Xuandi heard that Bing Ji had been promoted from the position of chief clerk to the general in chief to that of imperial counselor, he made preparations to give him a fief.
Hearing that Ji was seriously ill, he was about to send a man to present him with the sash of enfeoffment, hoping thereby to accomplish the conferral while Ji was still alive.
Xiahou Sheng, the senior tutor to the crown prince, said, “He will not die this time.
Your servant has heard that those who practice secret virtue are assured of enjoying blessings that will spread as well to their sons and grandsons.” In this case Ji has fallen seriously ill before obtaining this reward; it is therefore not his final illness.
Later on Ji in fact got over his illness.
He was enfeoffed as the lord of Boyang and was able to enjoy blessings to the end of his days.
