吳王欲使將，不肯，欲殺之，使一都尉以五百人圍守盎。
Yuan Ang, in his capacity as superintendent of ceremonial, was sent as an emissary to Wu.
盎為吳相時，從史與盎侍兒私通，盎知之，不泄，遇之如故。
The prince of Wu wanted to make Ang his general, but Ang would not consent.
人有告從史，從史懼，亡歸，盎自追，遂以侍兒賄之，復為從史。
Then, wishing to have Ang killed, he had a commandant surround him with a force of five hundred men. Formerly, when Ang was the prime minister of Wu, an aide of his had had a secret affair with one of his serving maids.
及盎使吳，見圍守，從史適為守盎校司馬。
Ang, though aware of it, did not reveal the matter and treated the aide as usual.
夜引盎起曰：「君可以去矣，吳王期旦日斬君。
Then someone denounced the aide, who took fright and fled to his home district.
」盎不信曰：「公何為者也？
Ang followed him there in person, bestowed the serving maid on him, and reinstated him in his aide’s position. Later, when Ang went as an emissary to Wu and was surrounded, it happened that the aide was a lieutenant in the force guarding him.
」司馬曰：「臣故為君從史，盜待兒者也。
He went and pulled Ang to his feet in the night, saying, “It would be best for you to go—the prince of Wu intends to have you beheaded at dawn.” Incredulous, Ang asked, “Why are you doing this?” “I was formerly your aide,” said the lieutenant.
」盎乃敬謝曰：「公有親，吾不足以累公。
“I stole your serving maid.” Ang respectfully declined his help, saying, “You have relatives.
」司馬曰：「君去，臣亦且亡，避吾親，君何患！
It isn’t worth it for you to implicate yourself on my behalf.” “When you go,” said the lieutenant, “I will flee as well, and I will have my relatives go elsewhere.
」乃以刀決帳，從醉卒道出，分背去。
盎遂歸報。
What are you worried about?” He then cut a hole in the tent with his sword and escorted him out of the encampment with his men. Ang then returned and made his report to the throne.
