One retainer said, “I, Xin Yu, shall follow them.” A state functionary apprehended him and was about to kill him.
The ruler said, “I decreed that you were forbidden to follow the Luan. Why do you dare follow them?” “I have heard,” replied Xin Yu, “that one whose people have served a house for three generations regards its chief as his ruler, whereas one whose people have served a house for two generations regards its chief as his master.
One serves a ruler by dying on his behalf, a master by being diligent—this is based on the quantity of favors bestowed.
In this case, my people have served the Luan for three generations, and the favors bestowed on us have been many—dare I fear death and forget those three generations of favor?” The ruler of Jin released him.
