」晏子使人分倉粟府金而遺之，辭金而受粟。
Sao declined the money but accepted the grain. Later on, when Yanzi fell under suspicion on Lord Jing’s part, he fled.
有間，晏子見疑於景公，出奔。
Master Beiguo summoned his friends and said to them, “I have heard a saying that goes, ‘When another man supports your parent, you must use your person to ransom him from trouble.’ Master Yan has now fallen under suspicion. I will die so as to clear his name.” He then went to the palace of the ruler of Qi and asked the functionary at the gate to convey this message: “Master Yan is a great worthy of the realm.
北郭子召其友而告之曰：「吾悅晏子之義，而嘗乞所以養母者。
Now that he has left Qi, Qi will surely suffer invasion. Rather than see this happen, I prefer to die.
吾聞之曰：『養及親者，身更其難。
』今晏子見疑，吾將以身死白之。
I beg permission to cut my throat so as to clear the name of Master Yan.” He then deferentially withdrew and killed himself.
」遂告公庭，求復者曰：「晏子，天下之賢者也。
When Lord Jing heard this, he was overcome with fear and went after Master Yan himself, using state relay vehicles.
今去齊國，齊國必侵矣，方必見國之侵也，不若先死，請絕頸以白晏子。
Overtaking him near the border of the state, he begged him to return. Yanzi had no alternative but to comply.
」逡巡而退，因自殺也。
On hearing that Master Beiguo had died in order to clear his name, he heaved a great sigh and said, “I am unworthy—the charge brought against me was deserved, yet a worthy man-at-arms gave up his life to make my innocence clear.
公聞之，大駭，乘馹而自追晏子，及之國郊，請而反之。
晏子不得已而反，聞北郭子之以死白己也，大息而嘆曰：「嬰不肖，罪過固其所也，而士以身明之，哀哉！」
Sad indeed!
