對曰:「政在使民富且壽。
Kongzi said, “Government consists of making the people wealthy and allowing them to live out their alloted days.” “What do you mean by that?” asked Lu Ai-gong.
」哀公曰:「何謂也?
」孔子曰:「薄賦斂則民富,無事則遠罪,遠罪則民壽。
“When taxes are decreased,” said Kongzi, “the people grow wealthy; when there are no disputes, instances of crime will be few; and, when instances of crime are few, the people will be long-lived.” “But, if I do as you say,” said Ai-gong.
」公曰:「若是,則寡人貧矣。
“I will be poor.” “In the Odes it is said, ‘Gracious is our lord, / The parents of his people,’13 replied Kongzi.
」孔子曰:「詩云:『愷愷悌君子,民之父母。
』未見其子富而父母貧者也。」
