“States ruled by true kings enrich the people,” he replied; “states ruled by hegemons enrich their men-at-arms; states that barely manage to survive enrich their court officers; and states that perish enrich their state coffers and storehouses.
」文王曰:「善。
In a word, the superior states pour out their wealth, while the inferior ones let it out in droplets.” “Well said!” said King Wen. “It is inauspicious to delay acting on sound advice,” said Lü Wang.
」對曰:「宿善不祥。
」是日也,發其倉府,以振鰥寡孤獨。
Before the day was out, King Wen opened his storehouses to aid orphans and those who had lost their spouses.
