梁王曰：「先生有一妻一妾不能治，三畝之園不能芸，言治天下如運諸手掌，何以？
」楊朱曰：「臣有之。
The king of Liang, said, “You have a wife and a concubine, sir, whom you are not able to govern, and you have a threehectare garden that you are unable to weed—what do you mean by saying that governing the realm is like rolling an object around in your palm?” “I have an explanation,” said Yang Zhu.
君不見夫羊乎，百羊而群，使五尺童子荷杖而隨之，欲東而東，欲西而西。
“Do you not see that sheep, Your Lordship?
君且使堯牽一羊，舜荷杖而隨之，則亂之始也。
臣聞之，夫吞舟之魚不遊淵，鴻鵠高飛不就污池，何則，其志極遠也。
When a hundred sheep gather to form a herd, one can order a four-foot boy to follow them with a stick on his shoulder.
黃鍾大呂，不可從繁奏之舞，何則？
Then, when you want them to go east, they will go east; and, when you want them to go west, they will go west.
其音疏也。
將治大者不治小，成大功者不小苛，此之謂也。」
But, if you have Yao lead a sheep and have Shun follow him with a stick on his shoulder, that would set the stage for disorder.
