」文侯曰：「何謂重死？
」對曰：「身死，妻子為戮焉。
Marquis Wen said, “Hui, what sort of crime is it when a man serves a ruler and treats him cruelly?” “It is a crime doubly worth death,” he answered.
」隨會曰：「君奚獨問為人臣忍其君者，而不問為人君而忍其臣者耶？
」文侯曰：「為人君而忍其臣者，其罪何如？
“What do you mean ‘doubly worth death’?” Marquis Wen asked.
」隨會對曰：「為人君而忍其臣者，智士不為謀，辨士不為言，仁士不為行，勇士不為死。
」文侯援綏下車，辭大夫曰：「寡人有腰髀之病，願諸大夫勿罪也。」
“One suffers death oneself, and one’s wife and children are executed for it as well.” Then Sui Hui said, “Why do you only ask about the crime of one whose role is to be an officer and is cruel to his ruler, and do not ask about one whose role is to be a ruler and is cruel to his officers?” “What sort of crime is it when one is a ruler and shows cruelty to one’s officers?” asked Marquis Wen. “If one is a ruler and shows cruelty to officers, then wise officers will not make schemes for him, officers skilled in argument will not make speeches for him, officers of good character will not act for him, and brave officers will not die for him.” Grasping the side rope, Marquis Wen descended from his chariot and said, “I have an illness in my back and legs; I hope you gentlemen will not blame me for this.
