」孔子曰：「在於尊賢而賤不肖。
“The clans of Fan and Zhonghang honored men of worth and despised those devoid of worth,” said Zilu, “so why did they perish?” “The clans of Fan and Zhonghang honored men of worth but were unable to make use of them,” said Kongzi.
」子路曰：「范中行氏尊賢而賤不肖，其亡何也？
“They despised those devoid of worth but were unable to get rid of them.
」曰：「范中行氏尊賢而不能用也，賤不肖而不能去也；賢者知其不己用而怨之，不肖者知其賤己而讎之。
The men of worth knew that they weren’t being used and resented it, whereas those devoid of worth knew they were held in low esteem and hated their rulers because of it.
賢者怨之，不肖者讎之。
怨讎並前，中行氏雖欲無亡得乎？」
With the resentment of the worthy and the hatred of the unworthy operating in combination, how could Fan and Zhonghang have avoided destruction, even if they had wished to do so?”
