A herald preceded him to the neighborhood and said, “His lordship is coming.” Yanzi arrayed himself in black court attire, stood at his gate, and said to Lord Jing, “Surely there is no problem among the vassal lords?
Surely there is no problem that affects the state?
Why do you trouble to travel here so late at night?” Lord Jing said, “The taste of fine wine, the sound of bells and chimes— I wish to share these things with you, sir.” Yanzi replied, “There are people appointed to spread mats and arrange the round and square bamboo baskets for offerings.
I dare not meddle with such things.” “Then we will transfer the banquet to the dwelling of Sima Rangju,” said Lord Jing.
A herald preceded him to the neighborhood and said, “His lordship is coming.” Sima Rangju donned his armor, grasped a dagger-pike, stood at his gate, and said to Lord Jing, “Surely the vassal lords are free of military conflicts?
Surely there are no rebels among our court officers?
Why do you trouble to travel here so late at night?” Lord Jing said, “The taste of fine wine, the sound of bells and chimes— I wish to share these things with you, sir.” Sima Rangju replied, “There are people appointed to spread mats and arrange the round and square bamboo baskets for offerings.
I dare not meddle with such things.” “Then let us transfer the banquet to the dwelling of Liang Qiuju,” said Lord Jing.
A herald preceded him to the neighborhood and said, “His lordship is coming.” Liang Qiuju grasped a zither in his left hand, held an ocarina aloft in his right, and came out singing to greet Lord Jing.
“How delightful!” exclaimed Lord Jing.
“I will drink this evening.
If it were not for the previous two officers, how could I govern my state?
But if I did not have this one, how could I experience pleasure?” A man of quality would observe that rulers of the worthiest sort have friends who benefit them and do not concern themselves with officers who share stolen pleasure with them.
Lord Jing did not come up to this standard, so he used both types and only barely escaped destruction.
