石讎曰:「春秋有忽然而足以亡者,國君不可以不慎也:妃妾不一足以亡,公族不親足以亡,大臣不任足以亡,國爵不用足以亡,親佞近讒足以亡,舉百事不時足以亡,使民不節足以亡,刑罰不中足以亡,內失眾心足以亡,外嫚大國足以亡。」
Shi Chou39 said, “In the era chronicled in the Annals, there were situations sufficient to result in the destruction of states that arose without warning; rulers of states cannot but take heed of this.
Lack of concord between consorts and concubines is enough to cause destruction; lack of family feeling between members of the ruling house is enough to cause destruction; the failure to give responsibilities to great ministers is enough to cause destruction; befriending flattering connivers is enough to cause destruction; beginning state enterprises out of season is enough to cause destruction; failure to observe restraint in using the people’s labor is enough to cause destruction; the commission of errors in the imposition of punishments is enough to cause destruction; losing the allegiance of people within the state is enough to cause destruction; and showing disrespect to great powers outside the state is enough to cause destruction.” Lessons to Be Drawn from the Career of Lord Qing of Qi
