文侯有不悅之色，太子亦然。
The guests and officers all stood up; only Tian Zifang remained seated.
田子方稱曰：「為子起歟？
Marquis Wen looked displeased, and so did the crown prince.
無如禮何。
Tian Zifang explained the matter, saying, “Should I stand up for this gentleman?
不為子起歟？
It would appear that this is not in accord with the rites.
And if I should not stand up for this gentleman?
無如罪何。
It would appear that there is no offense in it.
請為子誦113 ──楚恭王之為太子也，將出之雲夢，遇大夫工尹，工尹遂趨避家人之門中，太子下車，從之家人之門中，曰：『子大夫，何為其若是？

吾聞之：敬其父者不兼其子，兼其子者不祥莫大焉。
The director hurriedly entered a private dwelling so as to make way for the prince’s entourage.
子大夫，何為其若是！
The prince got down from his carriage, followed the officer into the dwelling, and said, ‘You are a court officer; why do you act like this?
I have heard that, when one extends respect to a father, that respect does not include the son. Nothing is more inauspicious than including the son in such respect.
』工尹曰：『向吾望見子之面，今而後記子之心。
Why, sir, do you act like this?’ The director of artisans said, ‘Before this I knew only your outward appearance, but from now on I shall take note of what lies in your heart.
審如此，汝將何之？
The matter is indeed as you describe it.
』」文侯曰：「善。
Where are you going?’” “Very apposite!” the marquis exclaimed.
」太子擊前誦恭王之言，誦三遍而請習之。
Crown Prince Ji stepped forward, recited the words of King Gong of Chu three times, then begged to study with Tian Zifang.
