」孔子曰:「恭敬忠信,可以為身。
When you are modest, you can avoid misfortune; when you are respectful, others will love you; when you are loyal, others will stay with you; and, when you are trustworthy, others will rely on you.
恭則免於眾,敬則人愛之,忠則人與之,信則人恃之。
Those whom people love, those whom people stay with, and those whom people rely upon will necessarily be free from disaster.
人所愛、人所與、人所恃,必免於患矣,可以臨國家,何況於身乎!
Such a person can draw an entire state to his side, so how could he not be able to establish himself?
故不比數而比疏,不亦遠乎?
Therefore, is it not a grave error to fail to model oneself on such people but instead to put them at distance?
不修中而修外,不亦反乎?
Is it not perverse to fail to cultivate the inner man and instead to cultivate externals?
不先慮事,臨難乃謀,不亦晚乎?」
