Whoever wishes to maintain his standing in the world must carefully attend to the five basics.

The first is to be flexible and empathetically perceptive; the second is to be sincere and trustworthy; the third is to not presume to carry oneself proudly before others even when possessed of wealth and rank; the fourth is to be modest and respectful; and the fifth is to be tolerant and composed.

思此五者，則無凶命，用能治敬以助天時，凶命不至而禍不來。

In days gone by I have seen metal, stone, and blood rain from the sky; I have seen four moons and ten suns come out together and then slide down with the sky; I have seen great mountains collapse and deep valleys fill up with earth, the capital city and royal palace suffer destruction, and great states go down to extinction. I have seen high mountains riven apart, deep lakes evaporate, exposing the sand at their bottoms, and people of high rank pulled apart by chariots.
