Jianzi wished to obtain the corpses, but the ruler of Tao would not give them up.
Cheng Pen Ju97 thereupon spoke to the Tao ruler as follows: “Jianzi intends to dig up your grave sites in order to strike the following bargain with your people: ‘Those who scale the wall with ladders [in order to surrender] will be pardoned, but I shall dig up the grave plots of those who do not.
The ashes of the bodies that have decayed will be scattered to the wind, and the bodies that have not decayed shall be pulled to pieces.” The Tao ruler was alarmed at this and asked to give back the corpses in return for a peace agreement.
