Kongzi said, “The house of Gongsuo will surely perish within three years.” One year later the house of Gongsuo perished.
A disciple said, “When the house of Gongsuo lost its sacrificial beasts, you said, sir, that it would perish within three years.
Now it has perished after one year.
How did you know that it was going to perish?” “The word ‘sacrifice’ (ji 祭),” said Kongzi, “has the same meaning as suo 索, and suo is a way of saying ‘to exhaust’ (jin 盡).
Thus, a filial son will exhaust his possessions in order to conduct a sacrifice to his ancestors.
When they lost their beasts as the time of the sacrifice approached, this showed that their other losses were numerous.
This was how I knew that the house was on the point of perishing.” Shu Xiang Foresees Cai’s Destruction by Chu
