絺疵謂智伯曰：「韓、魏之君必反矣。
Xi Ci33 said to the count of Zhi, “The rulers of Hán and Wey will surely turn against you.” “How do you know this?” asked the count of Zhi.
」智伯曰：「何以知之？
“Once Zhao is defeated,” said Xi Ci, “its territory will be divided into three.
」對曰：「夫勝趙而三分其地。
Only the top six feet of the city wall now remain above water.
今城未沒者三板，臼竈生鼃，人為相食，城降有日矣，而韓魏之君無喜志而有憂色，是非反何也！
Frogs are breeding in the mortars and cooking vessels, and people are devouring each other.
」明日，智伯謂韓、魏之君曰：「疵言君之反也。
The city’s downfall will occur in days, but the rulers of Hán and Wey do not look pleased; rather, they look worried.
」韓、魏之君曰：「必勝趙而三分其地。
Is this not an indication of revolt?” The next day the count of Zhi spoke to the rulers of Hán and Wey, saying, “Ci says you gentlemen are going to turn against me.” The rulers of Hán and Wey said, “It is certain that we will defeat Zhao and divide its territory among the three of us.
今城將勝矣，夫二家雖愚，不棄美利而偝約為難不可成之事，其勢可見也。
The city is on the verge of falling.
是疵必為趙說君，且使君疑二主之心，而解於攻趙也。
Though the two of us are stupid, we would never cast aside something so profitable to us and break an agreement in order to do something so difficult to accomplish; the logic of this is easy to see.
今君聽讒臣之言，而離二主之交，為君惜之。
Ci must have spoken to you at the behest of Zhao to see if he could make you suspect the two of us so that the attack would dissolve.
」智伯出，欲殺絺疵。
We will be very sorry on your behalf if you break relations with us because you gave credence to the words of a conniving officer.” The count of Zhi left intending to kill Xi Ci, but he had fled.
絺疵逃，韓、魏之君果反。
The rulers of Hán and Wey then broke with Zhi as he had predicted.
