The ruler of Wei was delighted and had a wine banquet prepared.
The officers all looked very pleased, with the sole exception of Nan Wenzi, who looked worried.
The Wei ruler said, “A great state has presented me with a gift, so I am having wine served to all my officers.
All the officers are pleased with this except for you—why do you look so worried?” “Gifts given for no reason,” replied Nan Wenzi, “and rewards given when none are due are preludes to disaster.
Wei did nothing for Zhi, and now Zhi is doing something for Wei.
That is why I am worried.” The ruler of Wei thereupon had the state’s river crossings and bridges repaired and drew up designs for border fortifications.
When the count of Zhi heard that the troops of Wei were stationed near the state’s borders, he withdrew.
