After Tian Dan26 became the commander in chief [of the forces of Qi], he raised a hundred thousand troops in order to attack the Di, then paid a visit to Master Lu Zhong Lian. Zhong Lian said, “You will be unable to defeat the Di in this campaign, general.” Tian Dan said, “With nothing more than a five-li walled settlement, the outer walls of which enclosed an area only ten li across, I restored the state of Qi—how could I not be capable of defeating the Di?” With this he left, mounted his carriage, spoke no more with Zhong Lian, and resolved to carry on with his plan to attack the Di.
