Kongzi said, “How can one know the danger of plummeting to earth without standing on a high cliff and gazing downward?

不臨於深泉，何以知沒溺之患？

How can one know the danger of drowning in the depths without drawing near to a watery abyss?

不觀於海上，何以知風波之患？

How can one know the danger of the wind and waves without gazing on the ocean’s face?

失之者其不在此乎？

士慎三者，無累於人。」

If a gentleman uses care in facing these three circumstances, he need not entangle others in his difficulties.
