聲音應對者,所以悅耳也。
A person’s voice and style of address are what he uses to please the ears of others.
嗜慾好惡者,所以悅心也。
君子衣服中,容貌得,則民之目悅矣。
A person’s likes and preferences are what he uses to please the hearts of others.
言語順,應對給,則民之耳悅矣。
If the clothing of a man in high position accords with good form and if his expression is seemly, then the people’s eyes will be pleased.
就仁去不仁,則民之心悅矣。
三者存乎心,暢乎體,形乎動靜,雖不在位,謂之素行。
If his speech is smooth and his responses suited to the occasion, then the people’s ears will be pleased.
故忠心好善,而日新之。
If he draws close to empathy (ren 仁) and rejects what is devoid of empathy, then the people’s hearts will be pleased.
獨居樂德,內悅而行。
If a man in high position stores these three principles in his heart, until they infuse all aspects of his being and appear in all his movements, whether in action or at rest, then, though he may not occupy a high position, he can nevertheless be looked upon as one who, though low in status, acts like an uncrowned ruler.
詩曰:「何其處也?
必有與也。
Thus, one who is loyal and cherishes goodness every day renews himself.
何其久也?
One who lives alone and delights in virtue comes to have an appearance suffused with virtue.
必有以也。
」惟有以者為能長生久視,而無累於物也。
As is said in the Odes, “Why does he live there? / He must have associates. / How does he last so long? / He must have things to rely on.
