“Your servant has heard,” said You Yu, “that, when Yao47 possessed the realm, rice was served in tile pots and drink in earthen urns.
」穆公曰:「願聞奢儉之節。
His territory extended to Jiaozhi in the south, to You Du in the north, and to the places where the sun rose and set in the east and west, and there were none who failed to honor and follow him.
」由余曰:「臣聞堯有天下,飯於土簋,啜於土㼛 鉶,其地南至交趾,北至幽都,東西至日所出入,莫不賓服。
When Yao relinquished the realm, Shun50 was the recipient.
堯釋天下,舜受之。
To make eating implements, he felled trees and used their wood, smelted copper and iron to make edged instruments, and surfaced them with black lacquer to turn them into utensils.
作為食器,斬木而裁之。
銷銅鐵,脩其刃,猶漆黑之以為器。
The regional lords thought this extravagant, and so there were thirteen states that did not submit to him.
諸侯侈。
When Shun relinquished the realm, Yu51 was the recipient.
國之不服者十有三。
In making sacrificial vessels, he lacquered their outer surfaces and adorned the inner surfaces with vermilion designs.
舜釋天下,而禹受之。
He used fine embroidered silk to make drapes and coverlets, and his drinking cups were inlaid with patterns even more extravagant than before; and so there were thirty-two states that did not submit to him.
作為祭器,漆其外,而朱畫其內。
“After the house of Xia perished, its possessions passed to Yin and then to Zhou.
繒帛為茵褥,觴勺有彩,為飾彌侈。
而國之不服者三十有二。
They made great vessels and created the Nine Royal Banners.
夏后氏以沒,殷周受之。
Their eating implements were carved and smoothed, their goblets engraved with patterns.
作為大器,而建九傲,食器彫琢,觴勺刻鏤。
Their walls were adorned on all sides with embroidered drapery, and their banquet mats bore elegant designs.
四璧四帷,茵席彫文,此彌侈矣。
Everything was more extravagant than before, and so there were fiftytwo states that did not submit to these ruling houses.
而國之不服者五十有二。
If a ruler is fond of showy decoration, then those who serve him will grow ever more extravagant.
君好文章,而服者彌侈。
故曰,儉其道也。」
Thus, it is said: ‘The Way lies in economy.
