As he turned this way and that, these items cast light, now to the left and now to the right.
坐有頃，太子不視也，又不問也。
They sat for a while, but the prince did not look at these things and made no inquiries concerning them.
經侯曰：「魏國亦有寶乎？
Jing Hou thereupon asked, “Does Wey too have treasures?” “Yes,” said the prince.
」太子曰：「有。
“What sort of treasures are they?” asked Jing Hou.
」經侯曰：「其寶如何？
“The trustworthiness of the ruler, the loyalty of his officers, and the support of the Hundred Clans for their superiors—these are the treasures of Wey,” replied the prince.
」太子曰：「主信臣忠，百姓戴上，此魏國之寶也。
“This is not the sort of thing I wished to ask about,” said Jing Hou.
」經侯曰：「吾所問者，非是之謂也，乃問其器而已。
“I was asking only about precious objects.” “With Tu Shi Zhao55 in charge of Wey’s affairs,” said the prince, “our markets are free of unauthorized transactions.
」太子曰：「有徒師沼治魏，而市無豫賈。
With Xi Xin56 in charge of Yang, objects left on the road are not picked up.
郄辛治陽，而道不拾遺。
With Mang Mao57 at court, there are none among the worthy men of neighboring areas who do not come, one after the other, to pay court to us.
芒卯在朝，而四鄰賢士無不相因而見。
These three officers are the treasure of Wey.” At this, Jing Hou was silent and made no reply.
此三大夫，乃魏國之大寶。
Removing the jade implements and rings that were attached on the left and right to his person, and, leaving them where he had been seated, he quietly got up, hurried out without announcing his departure, mounted his carriage, and drove off.
」於是經侯默然不應，左解玉具，右解環佩，委之坐，愆然而起，默然不謝，趨而出，上車驅去。
The prince of Wey had horsemen, taking the sword and other precious objects, overtake him and say on his behalf, “I lack the virtue to be the recipient of treasures, and I cannot be kept secure by pearls and jade.
魏太子使騎操劍佩逐與經侯，使告經侯曰：「吾無德所寶，不能為珠玉所守，此寒不可衣，饑不可食，無為遺我賊。
」於是經侯杜門不出，傳死。
These things cannot be worn when it is cold and cannot be eaten in times of starvation. Pray don’t leave them behind to cause me injury.” Jing Hou thereupon shut himself up in his dwelling and soon died of shame.58 53 Jing Hou 經侯: unattested elsewhere.
