Yanzi declined to do this, saying, “The line ‘their hats lie askew’ in the Odes refers to a loss of virtue.
『醉而不出，是謂伐德』，賓主之罪也。
The line ‘they reel about without cease’79 refers to a loss of proper deportment.
The lines ‘Made drunk with wine, / Made full with virtue’80 and ‘On getting drunk, I take my leave / Sharing blessings with the host’ refer to the ritual proper to host and guest.
嬰已卜其日，未卜其夜。」
The lines ‘On getting drunk I don’t depart; / And thus do injury to virtue’81 refer to a fault in the behavior of host and guest.
