好樂聲色者，淫也。
To immerse oneself in sensual pleasure is wanton excess (yin 淫); to be unscrupulously greedy is delusion (huo 惑).
食姦者，惑也。
A state afflicted with excess and delusion, please note, will diminish, if not perish.
夫淫惑之國，不亡必殘。
From this time on, let no one allow his fondness for beautiful concubines to lead him to hold his proper spouse in suspicion; let no one allow his fondness for entrancing sounds to cause him to neglect his proper business; let no one allow his illicit desires to interfere with the common good; and let no one make his greed for showy possessions an example to be observed by those beneath him.
自今以來，無以美妾疑妻，無以聲樂妨正，無以姦情害公，無以貨利示下。
Should there be anyone who does this, he will be cutting off the roots of his existence and abandoning himself to its flowers and leaves.
其有之者，是謂伐其根素，流於華葉。
If this should happen with anyone here, then there shall be no reason to feel concern should disaster befall him nor any need to provide succor should bandits attack him.
若此者，有患無憂，有寇勿弭。
If any should fail to act in accord with this oath, let the words of it be shown to him.” A man of discernment, hearing of this, said, “Does Lord Wen not know the Way?
不如言者，盟示之。
」於是君子聞之曰：「文公其知道乎，其不王者，猶無佐也。」
That he has not become a king is because he lacks assistance.
