先生于大学格物诸说,悉以旧本为正,盖先儒所谓误本者也。
In all that the Teacher said regarding the investigation of things"of the Great Learning, he always considered the use of the original edition as correct — the one which former scholars considered mistaken.
爱始闻而骇,既而疑,已而殚精竭思。
I was shocked when I first heard him, then became skeptical, then devoted all my energy and thought to it.
参互错综,以质于先生,然后知先生之说,若水之寒,若火之热,断断乎百世以俟圣人而不惑者也。
Then first did I understand that his exposition was so correct that the sage a hundred generations hence would not doubt it.
先生明睿天授,然和乐坦易,不事边幅。
Our Teacher is endowed with intelligence and wisdom.
But he is at peace, happy, self-possessed, and simple, and pays no attention to his appearance.
人见其少时豪迈不羁,又尝泛滥于词章,出入二氏之学。
In youth he seemed to have the martial bearing of age.He wrote many long themes, but did not use unnecessarily many words.
He investigated and rejected the learning of the two religions (Buddhism and Taoism).
骤闻是说,皆目以为立异好奇,漫不省究。
When this was heard by others, they looked upon him as a man seeking to be different from others, and not giving anything thorough consideration,
不知先生居夷三载,处困养静精一之功,固已超入圣域,粹然大中至正之归矣。
They did not realize that after having been in a barbarous land for [nearly] three years, living in hardship and nourished by tranquility, our Teacher has achieved a refinement and singleness of mind which has definitely penetrated the sphere of the sages and has arrived at the point of great perfection and absolute correctness.
爱朝夕炙门下,但见先生之道,即之若易,而仰之愈高。
I have been exposed to his teachings day and night.
I can only see that the way of our Teacher, in our immediate contact with it, seems to be easy, but the more we look up toward it, the higher it becomes.
见之若粗,而探之愈精。
Though to some they appeared rough and uncouth, examination showed them to be very complete.
就之若近,而造之愈益无穷。
Approach it and it seems near, but the more you try to accomplish it, the more inexhaustible it becomes.
世之君子,或与先生仅交一面,或犹未闻其馨欬,或先怀忽易愤激之心,而远欲于立谈之间、传闻之说,臆断悬度。

从游之士,闻先生之教,往往得一而遗二。
As to our Teacher's followers, when they heard his teachings, they often got only a third of them and missed the rest.
心即理也。
that is all, for the mind and principle are identical.
见其牝牡骊黄,而弃其所谓千里者。
Seeing, as it were, only the sex and color of the horse while overlooking its capacity of a thousand li;
故爱备录平日之所闻,私以示夫同志,相与考正之。
I have made a record of what I heard that I may secretly reveal it to those of like aspiration, and that thus we may mutually examine and correct it
庶无负先生之教云。
with a view to not losing the Teacher's instruction.

I made inquiry regarding "to love the people,5,[Great Learning, Introduction, Paragraph 1.] [ibid., Ch. 2, 1 2.] which the philosopher Chu said should be translated "to renovate the people,''
后章‘作新民’之文似亦有据。
Since in a later section of the book it says, ‘arouse the people to become new.
He seems to have some evidence for his contention
先生以为宜从旧本‘作亲民’,亦有所据否”?
Do you also have evidence for believing that the phrase ‘in loving the people' in the old text should be followed?”
先生曰:"‘作新民’之‘新’,是自新之民,与‘在新民’之‘新’不同。
The Teacher said: "The character hsin (新)in the later chapter naturally means that the people renovate themselves, a thought which differs from the meaning of this particular passage.
此岂足为据?
Is your evidence for the new edition sufficient?
‘作’字却与‘亲’字相对。
The term ‘arouse the people to become' parallels the term ‘love' but does not mean the same.
然非‘亲’字义。
but does not mean the same.
下面治国平天下处,皆于‘新’字无发明。
The passages that follow in the text on bringing order to the state and peace to the world do not amplify the meaning of renovation.
