接客，则一心在接客上。
or in receiving guests one is completely engaged in receiving guests,
可以为主一乎”？
Can these be regarded as concentrating on one thing ?”
非主一也。
and should not be considered as mastering the mind.
先生曰:"好色则一心在好色上。
The Teacher said:"If in being fond of women one gives one's self completely to salaciousness,
可以为主一乎？
may these be considered as instances of mastering one's mind?
相上则损。
If they try to be superior to each other, it will hurt them.”
是所谓逐物。
They are chasing after material things.
主一是专主一个天理”。
To master one 's mind implies mastering moral principles."
〔2〕问立志。
I asked about making up the mind.
先生曰:"只念念要存天理，即是立志。
The Teacher said, "It is simply the resolution, in every thought, to preserve the Principle of Nature.
能不忘乎此，久则自然心中凝聚。
If one does not neglect this, in due time it will crystallize in one's mind
犹道家所谓结圣胎也。
It may be compared to the Taoists' saying, a matrix which brings forth the virtues of the sage.
此天理之念常存。
If the thought of the Principle of Nature is always retained,
驯至于美大圣神，亦只从此一念存养扩充去耳”。
little by little becomes a beautiful, great sage and spirit-man.But it is also necessary, in obedience to this thought, to nurture and practice these principles'
恶如桀纣。
At another time he spoke again, saying, "Sageness is like the evil of Chieh and Chou.
〔3〕日间工夫觉纷扰，则静坐。
The Teacher said: ''If during the day one feels that work is becoming annoying, one should sit and rest.
觉懒看书，则且看书。
One should study though one feels an aversion to it.
是亦因病而药。
This is also giving a remedy for disease.
夫子说之。
The master was pleased.
〔4〕处朋友，务相下，则得益。
[The Teacher said,] "Friends, in dealing with each other, should try to be humble toward one another, for that will benefit them.
〔5〕孟源有自是好名之病。
Meng Yuan has the defects of regarding himself as always right and of loving fame.
多少实用？
All these are very useful.
先生屡责之。
The Teacher has admonished him many times.
一友自陈日来工夫请正。
a friend of his told the Teacher of his recent efforts and asked for correction.
