时，大师至宝林，韶州韦刺史与官僚入山，请师出，于城中大梵寺讲堂，为众开缘说法。
Once, when the Patriarch had arrived at Pao Lin Monastery, Prefect Wei of Shao Chou and other officials went there to ask him to deliver public lectures on Buddhism in the hall of Ta Fan Temple in the City of Canton.
时，大师至宝林，韶州韦刺史与官僚入山，请师出。
When the Great Master arrived at Baolin[si] ('treasure Grove Monastery"), Prefect Wei (whose given name was Qu) and his official staff entered the monastery and invited the master to come to the lecture hall at Dafansi ("Great Purity Monastery") within the city, where he could tell his story and preach the Dharma for those assembled.
于城中大梵寺讲堂，为众开缘说法。
When the Great Master arrived at Baolin[si] ('treasure Grove Monastery"), Prefect Wei (whose given name was Qu) and his official staff entered the monastery and invited the master to come to the lecture hall at Dafansi ("Great Purity Monastery") within the city, where he could tell his story and preach the Dharma for those assembled.
师升座次，刺史官僚三十余人，儒宗学士三十余人，僧尼、道俗一千余人，同时作礼，愿闻法要。
After the master took his seat, the prefect and official staff, more than thirty in number, the Confucian scholars, more than thirty in number, and the monks, nuns, and laypeople, more than a thousand in number, simultaneously did obeisance to him and beseeched him to relate the essentials of the Dharma.
大师告众曰："善知识，菩提自性，本来清净，但用此心，直了成佛。
The Great Master told the assembly, "Good friends, bodhi is fundamentally pure in its self-nature.
You must simply use this mind [that you already have], and you will achieve buddhahood directly and completely.
善知识！
Good friends, listen well!

This is the story of how I practiced and attained the Dharma.
"惠能严父，本贯范阳，左降流于岭南，作新州百姓。
"My father was a native of Fanyang (Zhuo Xian, Hebei), but he was banished to Lingnan and became a commoner in Xinzhou (Xinxing Xian,Guangdong).
此身不幸，父又早亡，老母孤遗。
I was unlucky in that my father died when I was very young, leaving my mother poor and miserable.
此身不幸，父又早亡，老母孤遗，移来南海；艰辛贫乏，于市卖柴。
I have been unfortunate: my father died early, and my aged mother and I, her only child, moved here to Nanhai.
Miserably poor, I sold firewood in the marketplace.
移来南海，艰辛贫乏。
On hearing the words of the scripture, my mind opened up and I understood.
I asked the traveler what scripture he was reciting.
时有一客买柴，使令送至客店，客收去，惠能得钱，却出门外，见一客诵经，惠能一闻经语，心即开悟。
"At one time, a customer bought some firewood and had me deliver it to his shop, where he took it and paid me.
On my way out of the gate I saw someone reciting a sutra, and as soon as I heard the words of the sutra my mind opened forth in enlightenment.
于市卖柴时，有一客买柴，使令送至客店。
I was selling firewood in the market one day, when one of my customers ordered some to be brought to his shop.
遂问客诵何经，客曰《金刚经》。
I then asked the person what sutra he was reciting, and he said, "The Diamond Sutra."
客收去，惠能得钱，却出门外，见一客诵经。
I then asked him where he had gotten this scripture from.
惠能一闻经语，心即开悟。
As soon as I heard the text of this sutra my mind at once became enlightened.
其寺是五祖忍大师在彼主化，门人一千有余。
The Fifth Patriarch, Great Master Hongren, resides at and is in charge of instruction at that monastery.
He has over a thousand followers.
复问从何所来，持此经典。
I further enquired whence he came and why he recited this particular sutra.
我到彼中礼拜，听受此经。
I went there, did obeisance to him, and received this sutra there.
客云，我从蕲州黄梅县东禅寺来；其寺是五祖忍大师在彼主化；门人一千有余；我到彼中礼拜，听受此经。
After having gotten my mother settled, I left right away and reached Huang-mei within thirty-odd days.
There I paid respects to the Fifth Grand Master.
大师常劝僧俗，但持《金刚经》，即自见性，直了成佛。
Great Master [Hongren] always exhorts both monks and laymen to simply maintain the Diamond Sutra, so that one can see the [self]-nature by oneself and achieve buddhahood directly and completely."
惠能闻说，宿昔有缘，乃蒙一客，取银十两与惠能，令充老母衣粮，教便往黄梅参礼五祖。"
It must be due to my good karma in past lives that I heard about this, and that I was given ten taels for the maintenance of my mother by a man who advised me to go to Huang Mei to interview the Fifth Patriarch.
惠能安置母毕，即便辞违，不经三十余日，便至黄梅，礼拜五祖。
I then left my mother for the last time and departed.
In less than thirty odd days I arrived at Huangmei, where I did obeisance to the Fifth Patriarch.
