六祖惠能大师於韶州大梵寺施法坛经一卷――兼受无相戒弘法弟子法海集记。
The Platform Sutra Delivered at Tafan Temple in Shaochou by the Sixth Patriarch, Master Hui-neng, in one volume, compiled and recorded by Fa-hai, recipient of the Formless Precepts and advocate of the Dharma.
1、惠能大师於大梵寺讲堂中，升高座，说摩诃般若波罗蜜法，授无相戒。

Master Hui-neng took his seat in the lecture hall of Tafan Temple to expound the teaching of Mahaprajnaparamita and to transmit the Formless Precepts.
韶州刺史韦据及诸官僚30馀人，儒士馀人，同请大师说摩诃般若波罗蜜法。
The prefect of Shao-chou, Wei Ch'u, some thirty officials from various departments, and some thirty Confucian scholars all begged the Master to preach on the Dharma of the Great Perfection of Wisdom.
同请大师说摩诃般若波罗蜜法。
Together they asked the Master to explain the teaching of Mahaprajnaparamita.
刺史遂令门人僧法海集记，流行后代，与学道者，承此宗旨，递相传授，有所依约，以为禀承，说此《坛经》。
The magistrate then instructed the Master's disciple Fa-hai to make a record to pass down to future generations so that students of the Way who carry on its guiding principle and who transmit it to others might have this testament as their authority.
2、能大师言：「善知识，净心念摩诃般若波罗蜜法。」

The Master Hui-neng said: "Good friends, purify your minds and concentrate on the Dharma of the Great Perfection of Wisdom."
大师不语，自净心神，
Then the Master stopped speaking, while he purified his own mind.
良久乃言：善知识静听。
Then after a good while he said: "Good friends, listen quietly.
惠能慈父，本官范阳，
My father was originally an official at Fan-yang.
惠能慈父，本官范阳，左降，迁流南新州百姓。
My kind-hearted father was originally from Fanyang.
But he was dismissed from office and banished to Lingnan and lived in Hsinchou as a commoner.
惠能幼小，父亦早亡。
My father died when I was quite young.

While I was still a child, my father died and my old mother and I, a solitary child, moved to Nan-hai.
老母孤遗，移来南海。

And my widowed and destitute mother moved to Nanhai, where I experienced hardship and poverty and sold firewood in the marketplace.
艰辛贫乏，於市卖柴。

We suffered extreme poverty and here I sold firewood in the market place.
忽有一客买柴，遂领惠能至於官店。
By chance a certain man bought some firewood and then took me with him to the lodging house for officials.
客将柴去，惠能得钱。
After he took the delivery and paid me, I walked toward the door and met a customer reciting the Diamond Sutra out loud.
却向门前，忽见一客读《金刚经》。

As soon as I heard the words, my mind felt clear and awake, and I asked the man, "Where did you get this scripture you're reciting?'
