大佛顶如来密因修证了义诸菩萨万行首楞严经
The Sutra of the Foremost Shurangama at the Great Buddha's Summit Concerning the Tathagata's Secret Cause of Cultivation, His Certification to the Complete Meaning and all Bodhisattvas' Myriad Practices.

卷第一证信
I The Noumenon in the Tathagata Store
如是我闻：一时 佛在室罗筏城祇桓精舍 与大比丘众千二百五十人俱 皆是无漏大阿罗汉。
Thus have I heard.
Once the Buddha stayed in the Jetavana vihara near Sravasti with twelve hundred and fifty bhiksus, (most of whom) were great arhats who had crossed the stream of transmigration.
佛子住持 善超诸有 能于国土 成就威仪。
They upheld His teaching firmly, could leap over all realms of existence and had achieved the respect-inspiring deportment which was held in great esteem throughout the country.
证信
The Testimony of Faith
从佛转轮 妙堪遗嘱。
They followed the Buddha to turn the Wheel of the Law and were qualified to hand down His Dharma.
严净毘尼 弘范三界 应身无量 度脱众生 拔济未来 越诸尘累。
Being self-disciplined, they set a good example in the three worlds in which they appeared in countless transformation bodies to deliver living beings and to save future generations from defilement.
一时，佛在室罗筏城祇桓精舍，
At one time the Buddha dwelt at the city of Shravasti in the sublime abode of the Jeta Grove.
与大比丘众千二百五十人俱，
With a gathering of great bhikshus, twelve hundred fifty in all.
复有无量辟支无学 并其初心 同来佛所。
There were also countless pratyeka-buddhas who (since they had conquered their old habits) had nothing more to learn, (yet) came to the Buddha's vihara determined to seek (ultimate) Truth.
皆是无漏大阿罗汉。佛子住持
All were great Arhats without outflows, disciples of the Buddha, dwellers and maintainers.
属诸比丘 休夏自恣 十方菩萨 谘决心疑 钦奉慈严 将求密义。
Now the summer retreat had just finished when the bhiksus took stock of their errors and mistakes and when the Bodhisattvas from the ten directions, determined to wipe out their remaining doubts and suspicions, reverently awaited the Teaching in their search for its esoteric meaning.
善超诸有，能于国土成就威仪，
They had fully transcended all existence, and were able to travel everywhere, and to accomplish the awesome deportment.
实时如来，敷座宴安，为诸会中，宣示深奥，
And so the Tathagata arranged His seat and sat with crossed legs to proclaim the profound (Doctrine).
从佛转轮妙堪遗嘱，
They followed the Buddha in turning the wheel and were wonderfully worthy of the bequest.
法筵清众 得未曾有 迦陵仙音 遍十方界，
Such a Dharma feast to purify the assembly had never taken place before and His melodious voice was hard is the ten quarters.
严净毘尼弘范三界，
Stern and pure in the Vinaya, they were great exemplars in the three realms.
恒沙菩萨 来聚道场 文殊师利 而为上首。
Led by Manjusri, a number of Bodhisattvas as countless as sand grains in the Ganges, had come to the holy place.
应身无量度脱众生，拔济未来越诸尘累。
Their limitless response-bodies took living beings across and liberated them, pulling out and rescuing those of the future so they could transcend all the bonds of dust.
时，波斯匿王为其父王讳日营斋 请佛宫掖 自迎如来 广设珍羞 无上妙味 兼复亲延 诸大菩萨；
Meanwhile, King Prasenajit who was keeping the anniversary of his father's death by offering vegetarian food to him, came personally to invite the Tathagata to the inner palace for a royal feast of best and rarest delicacies, to which he also invited the great Bodhisattvas in the assembly.
其名曰：大智舍利弗、摩诃目干连、摩诃拘絺罗、富楼那弥多罗尼子、须菩提、优波尼沙陀等而为上首。
The names of the leaders were: the greatly wise Shariputra, Mahamaudgalyayana, Mahakaushthila, Purnamaitreyaniputra, Subhuti, Upanishad, and others.
城中复有 长者居士 同时饭僧 伫佛来应。
In the city the elders and devotees also offered food to members of the Order and reverently waited for the Buddha's arrival.
