So roaming men detest the parting vows.
The roaming man is sad at the word “part”;
For guests and drivers, too, tears also start.
With tears in eyes, he sets out on his way,
Comes back again and has a word to say.
A short-time separation gives him woe,
Let alone to distant land he’ll go.
Long and tedious is the journey on the way;
Dim and dark becomes the end of day.
When those who stay at home have gone to bed,
The roaming man has just been barely fed.
When night wind in the fields begins to blow,
The roaming man is filled with deepest woe.
