So roaming men detest the parting vows. The roaming man is sad at the word “part”;
For guests and drivers, too, tears also start. With tears in eyes, he sets out on his way,
Comes back again and has a word to say. A short-time separation gives him woe,
Let alone to distant land he’ll go. Long and tedious is the journey on the way;
Dim and dark becomes the end of day. When those who stay at home have gone to bed,
The roaming man has just been barely fed. When night wind in the fields begins to blow,
The roaming man is filled with deepest woe. He finds it sour to eat plums on the way;
He feels the cold wearing hemp all day. E'en when he hears guests talk and music play,
The worried man will not be happy and gay. When he sings aloud to get relief,
He sinks still more profoundly into grief.
