Luckilythere were no longerthenames of Lifu, Huan-erh, and Chen San.
After being assuredthese were alltheoccupants of theGardenthepo-lice left courteously after inspectingthehouse and made no disturbance.
Afei had heard of themurder, and half suspected that Chen San and Huan-erh were connected with it, but fortunatelythey were gone.
He also suspected that thecoming of thepolice had something to do with themurder, and that they had probably been sent by Huaiyu.

He learned later that thepolice had been to Taiyun's home, butthemother had toldthem that her daughter was away at Tientsin and had not come back.
Underthecircumstances, Afei decided that both he himself andtheGarden were in danger: first, because of Huaiyu's return, and, second, because he had made many enemies as head of theOpium Suppression Bureau and could be consid-ered a Chinese government official.
He invited Miss Donahue, Paofen's American friend, to stay in theGarden and made a deed turning overtheGarden to her, and told her to raise an American flag at theentrance.
He knew that she was too hon-est to take advantage of this, andthedeed was a mere formality to satisfythepo-lice in case of trouble.
