“Once I went with Bao Shu as a peddler to Nanyang66 and was thrice put to shame in the marketplace.
鮑子嘗與我有所說王者,而三不見聽,鮑子不以我為不肖,知我之不遇明君也。
But Bao Shu did not think me weak, for he knew that I would soon do things that would make me famous.
鮑子嘗與我臨財分貨,吾自取多者三,鮑子不以我為貪,知我之不足於財也。
Bao Shu and I once set forth arguments before the king, and my proposals thrice failed to be adopted, but Bao Shu did not deem me unworthy, for he knew that I had not yet met an enlightened ruler.
生我者父母,知我者鮑子也。
Bao Shu and I were once in charge of distributing wealth, and I thrice took more than my share, but Bao Shu did not think me greedy, for he knew I suffered from an insufficiency of goods.
士為知己者死,而況為之哀乎?」
A man of principle will die for one who truly understands him—how much more, then, will he grieve for such a person!
