晏子諫曰：「君不勝欲為臺，今復欲為鐘，是重斂於民，民必哀矣。
Master Yan admonished him about it, saying, “You were unable, Your Lordship, to restrain your desire to build a tower, and now you wish to have a bell cast as well.
夫斂民之哀，而以為樂，不祥。
To act thus is to impose a double exaction upon the people; they are sure to be miserable as a result.
」景公乃止。
It is not auspicious, let us note, to multiply the people’s miseries and then use their misery to enjoy oneself.” Lord Jing thereupon desisted.
