“Qin has smashed Hán and destroyed Wey,” said the king.
“Only the lord of Yanling survives with fifty li of territory.
How could I stand in awe of him?
It would seem that he is a gallant man indeed!
But now I have offered him ten times the territory he now possesses in exchange for Yanling, and he won’t accept—that shows he holds me in disdain.” “That is not the case!” said Tang Qie, leaving his mat.
“One might say that Yanling is the epitome of a man who does not run hither and thither pursuing profit and avoiding loss.
The lord of Yanling received his domain from its previous rulers and is responsible for safeguarding it.
Even ten thousand li wouldn’t be sufficient to give in exchange for it, let alone five hundred.” “Have you ever observed the anger of a Son of Heaven?” asked the king, with fury showing in his face.
“I am but another’s servant; I have never seen it,” said Tang Qie.
“When the Son of Heaven is angry,” said the king, “a million corpses are strewn on the ground, and blood flows for a thousand li.” “Has Your Majesty ever observed the anger of a poor man-at-arms in a marketplace?” asked Tang Qie.
“When a poor man-at-arms in a marketplace is angry,” said the king, “He removes his hat, goes barefoot, and knocks his head on the ground.
Who doesn’t know that?
