Once, when Qi was attacking Lu, Zigong17 had an audience with Lord Ai18 and asked permission to seek help from Wu.

公曰：「奚先君寶之用？

“Would it help to use one of our former rulers’ treasures?” asked Lord Ai.

」子貢曰：「使吴責吾寶而與我師，是不可恃也。

」於是以楊幹麻䈥之弓六往。

“If Wu sends us troops only to obtain treasure,” replied Zigong, “their aid will be unreliable.” He accordingly went to Wu with six willow-wood and deer-pelt bows.
