The prince’s chief retainer, Zhao Cang Tang, came to speak to him about it, saying, “When one is a person’s son, to let three years go by without hearing any word of him is unfilial; and, when one is a person’s father, to let three years go by without inquiring after him is unfatherly.
Why don’t you have someone go as an emissary to your father’s great state?” “I have wanted to do this for a long time,” said the prince, “but I have not been able to find an emissary.” “I’m willing to undertake the mission,” said Zhao Cang Tang.
“What things is the Wey marquis particularly fond of?” “He is fond of wild ducks and northern hunting dogs,” said the prince.
He accordingly had Cang Tang net some northern hunting dogs and wild ducks to present to Marquis Wen of Wey.
When Cang Tang arrived at the palace, he sent in an announcement, saying, “I am the emissary of your son Ji.
I dare not assume the dignity of a court officer.
When you are at leisure, I shall beg to present some wild ducks to your kitchen staff and some northern hunting dogs to your groundskeepers.
