The Ad Hoc Advisory Group was very much encouraged by the successful conduct of the referendum on the post-transition Constitution on 28 February 2005 and by the strong support expressed for it by voters.
The Constitution was promulgated on 18 March, and the electoral code and the communal law one month later, allowing the National Independent Electoral Commission to propose a new electoral calendar that was subsequently endorsed by the Regional Peace Initiative on Burundi.
In accordance with that calendar, the date for municipal elections was June 3, to be followed by legislative and senatorial elections on 4 and 29 July respectively and finally the Presidential election on 19 August.
