In the light of the difficulties in the implementation of the Darfur Peace Agreement and in view of the continuing insecurity in Darfur, a number of steps have been taken to carry out the November 2006 Addis Ababa and Abuja decisions.

Re-energizing the political process

The Addis Ababa conclusions further expressed a number of concerns regarding the implementation of the Darfur Peace Agreement.

To that end, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission and the Secretary-General appointed Salim Ahmed Salim and Jan Eliasson, respectively, as their Special Envoys for Darfur, to focus on re-energizing the political process, to make the Darfur Peace Agreement more inclusive and to broaden support for the Agreement.
