常季问于仲尼曰:“王骀,兀者也。
Such a man cannot even tell peace which is from the Power.
从之游者与夫子中分鲁。
As for other things, he looks into that in which they are one, and does not see what each of them has lost; he regards losing his own foot as he would shaking off mud.
立不教,坐不议;虚而往,实而归。
His concern is for himself, he uses his wits to discover his own heart, his heart to discover the unchanging heart beyond it.
固有不言之教,无形而心成者邪?
是何人也?
Why should others congre gate around him?
None of us finds his mirror in flowing water, we find it in still water.
”仲尼曰:“夫子,圣人也,丘也直后而未往耳。
Only the still can still whatever is stilled.
丘将以为师,而况不若丘者乎!
Among all that owe their destiny to the earth, only the pine and cypress are due on course; winter and summer they are the same green.
奚假鲁国!
Among all that owe their destiny to Heaven, only Yao and Shun are due on course; they stand at the head of the myriad things.
丘将引天下而与从之。
One blessed with the ability to set life due on course does it for every living thing The test that one holds fast to the Beginning is the fact of not being afraid.
” 常季曰:“彼兀者也,而王先生,其与庸亦远矣。
若然者,其用心也独若之何?
A single brave knight will boldly enter a battle of great armies; if this can be done even by a man capable of exerting himself out of ambition to make a name, how much more by one who makes heaven and earth his palace and the myriad things his storehouse, his trunk and limbs a place where he lodges and his eyes and ears images which he perceives, who treats as one all that out of the world.
As for other men, it is for them to follow in his train; why should he want to make others his business?
”仲尼曰:“死生亦大矣,而不得与之变,虽天地覆坠,亦将不与之遗。
Shen-t'u Chia, a man with a chopped foot, was fellow student under Po-hun Nobody with Tzu-ch'an the Prime Minister of Cheng.
审乎无假而不与物迁,命物之化而守其宗也。

”常季曰:“何谓也?
If you make the first move to leave, I stay.
”仲尼曰:“自其异者视之,肝胆楚越也;自其同者视之,万物皆一也。
Next day he found himself sitting with him again for the same lesson on the same mat.
夫若然者,且不知耳目之所宜,而游心乎德之和;物视其所一而不见其所丧,视丧其足犹遗土也。
” 常季曰:“彼为己以其知,得其心以其心。
If I leave you stay, if you leave I stay.
I shall now leave.
得其常心,物何为最之哉?
Would it bother you too much to stay?
”仲尼曰:“人莫鑑于流水而鑑于止水,唯止能止众止。
Or would you rather not?
受命于地,唯松柏独也在冬夏青青;受命于天,唯舜独也正,幸能正生,以正众生。
And if you do not make way when you see the Prime Minister, are you putting yourself on a level with the Prime Minister?
夫保始之征,不惧之实;勇士一人,雄入于九军。
将求名而能自要者,而犹若是,而况官天地,府万物,直寓六骸,象耳目,一知之所知,而心未尝死者乎!
So there's really the Prime Minister, you say, here among our Master's pupils?
That's the one who being you is pleased it's you who's Prime Minister and turns his back on everyone else.
彼且择日而登假,人则从是也。
I have heard it said: If your mirror is bright the dust will not settle, if the dust settles it's that your mirror isn't bright.
彼且何肎以物为事乎!
Keep company long enough with a man of worth and there will be no crime in you.' The teacher you now acknowledge as the greatest is our Master, yet you can still talk to me like this.
